Yes, that's a sound error.
There's a problem with the engine that made it impossible to unload sound, so we tried to keep the sound effects to an minimum to avoid these problems as good as possible...
But if the sound-card is insufficient there are no way around it.
You should try playing it on another computer, it's really a great game :)
